The project brief was to design a specimen book for an existing typeface. I chose 'Visby'; a geometric sans serif designed by Connary Fagen. The format is a 36 page 190 x 240mm book, on uncoated recycled stock.
The outcome was a specimen book that captured the essence of Visby's personality: the “stark beauty of the Arctic Ocean”. I used a white and blue colour palette, creating a striking contrast similar to that of the ocean, snow covered land and sky of the arctic. This also helps communicate the sense of modernity and freshness that Visby brings to designs.
I emphasised it's versatility by alternating pages between body text, display text and subhead text, sometimes appearing on the same spread to illustrate its suitability in a wide range of projects. All weights are displayed throughout the book, showcasing the typeface's dynamic range.
I conveyed it's modern aesthetic using display pages, where the viewer can appreciate the elegant curves and straight lines in more detail, aided by the contrast of the blue and white.
